How much weight do I carry in my day sack?
How fit do I need to be?
This depends on what you want to carry and what you need to carry and also which type of trek you are doing. Typically, our treks are supported, which means you'll only need to carry a day sack with essentials. This way you'll only carry between 6-8kgs.
Being fit and prepared both physically and mentally will enable you to have a better experience and hopefully enjoy it more! Walking for 5-6hrs around 15-20km a day with 500m of ascent and decent is a standard day in the mountains, so having a goal set to be fit enough to comfortably achieve this is all you need.
What are the best trekking boots?
Simply the ones you have worn in the most. Knowing your type of boot that fits your feet is essential. Are you wide soled, narrow soled? Do you have high arches and need cushioned support or flat footed and take your own innersoles?
A boot specialist in a walking shoe shop or running shop will be able to advise more.
What gear do I need?
What about trekking poles?
A good pair of well worn in trail boots or walking boots is a must! Having a rucksack that enables you to adjust the waist and shoulders, that is comfortable on you all day is a matter of trial and error. Find out what works for you. The great thing about walking is you don't need much expensive kit and equipment.
Nowadays I always carry and often use a set of trekking poles. There is some great studies that suggest the poles improve you walking posture, alignment and efficiency whilst trekking. About 20% more energy efficient...Over the course of a day over hours of trails that adds up. Take all the help you can get!

How do I prepare for the desert?
What insurance do I need?
The desert is a beautifully unforgiving place to be out of your comfort zone. So training for the heat and the sand is essential, sand dunes are great for this. Being fit will mean you are more comfortable in these challenging places.
Everyone must have hiking and activities insurance that covers them for the region and altitude of the trek. For example, the Moroccan Atlas mountains, North Africa, 4000m, hiking and remote areas.
